You've almost made it!
The number one concern we are hearing right now is, “My kid aren't practicing enough!” This is followed by, “He is so busy! She is stressed. Or, I'm not sure if he/she is interested anymore.” There is a simple explanation for this dilemma: SUMMER FEVER! We've all had it at some point. Homework, work, and practicing feels like it's never ending. Our attention spans are diminishing more and more. We want summer break to get here along with more free time and vacation! Here’s the solution: HANG ON!
I promise that things are going to get better! Soon, the exams and projects will be over, and the craziness of finishing up the semester will be over. Do you know what’s around the corner? The thought, What can I do all summer? That’s right, Summer BOREDOM! Right now freedom from all the homework and expectations sounds luxurious, but I promise, you’ll want something to do this summer when everything dies down. And once again, you’ll drift to your instrument to play around and enjoy music. It won’t feel like a chore at all anymore!
As a parent, what can you do right now? First of all, take pressure off of “practicing.” Just encourage your child to “play.” Instead of nagging, “Have you practiced today?!?” Say, “Have you played your instrument today?” This implies that music is enjoyable (because IT IS!) and even gives a mental break from homework or chores. Music uses a different part of the brain and will actually energize the student, rather than just being one more task to get done.
To recap, #1: Hang in there! Summer are coming quickly!
#2: Phrase your words differently. Encourage your student (or yourself!) to go “Play music!” instead of requiring practice time, which feels like something to be dreaded or avoided.
#3: Know that you are NOT alone. Many are feeling this shift in the seasons. But if you hang in there, summer lessons are a LOT of fun because students have more time to play and more time to work on the music that they really want to play. For an extra pick-me-up, choose a new music book with your teacher this week! New music will always breathe life back into your soul and give you energy to press on!
Forté's Student of the Month: Jacob I.
Jacob lives in San Marcos and attends San Marcos High School. His favorite things to do in his spare time are skating and basketball. He is learning to play guitar and has learned how to read music and play multiple songs since starting his lessons here. His favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold and his favorite song is 4:00 a.m. What he likes most about talking lessons here is he gets to learn how to play that songs that he likes to listen to. Jacob has a fish named Mr. Fish. Congratulations Jacob on being our May Student of the Month!
Welcome our new students who enrolled in April!
